NCPD: Beyond Case Presentations (3-Hour CE/CPD for Clinical Supervisors)

DESCRIPTION: Case presentations are one of the most common tools used by clinical supervisors to gain necessary insights into how their supervisees are conceptualizing the scope and nature of the problems or concerns the clients of their supervisees are bringing into counseling or psychotherapy. Although case presentations are an efficient and even necessary means of acquiring this information, they rely on accurate self-reporting, which is often a skill in the early stages of development among many early practitioners who are still in school or have recently graduated.
Additionally, cognitive biases such as the Dunning-Kruger Effect (the tendency for people with limited competence to overestimate their skills/abilities) and the Self-Serving Bias (the tendency to attribute positive outcomes to one’s own efforts and negative outcomes to external factors), can further impede the probability of clinical supervisors gaining accurate information from their supervisees. Because both supervisors and supervisees have a lot to lose, not to mention the clients and communities they serve, effective clinical supervisors don’t over-rely on narrative case presentations as the sole form of data gathering to evaluate the clinical cases of their supervisees, especially early in the supervisory relationship.
Instead, effective supervisors employ a mix of techniques that utilize direct observation and/or experientially or process-based simulation to help corroborate the data presented in narrative case presentations alongside the data revealed in direct observation or simulations. Unfortunately, many clinical supervisors lack easy access to direct observation methods, such as one-way mirrors, co-therapy, live sessions, and video recordings. In light of this, they would be wise to enlist some experientially based simulation strategies, such as role-plays, role-reversals, and live demonstrations; however, they frequently lack experience and/or confidence in using them as a tool to evaluate their supervisee’s case conceptualization and clinical practice skills.
This mini-course is designed specifically for clinical supervisors who want to gain a deeper understanding of and enhance their skills in using experiential supervisory tools to mitigate some of the problems associated with overuse of narrative self-reporting by becoming more comfortable with direct observational strategies. DESCRIPTION: Assessment, diagnosis, and intervention are a set of overlapping and integrated skills referred to as the "Clinical Process" in this dynamic training designed for new and advanced clinicians. Training participants first review the history of the DSM® and the historical contexts, cultural factors, and clinical trends associated with the publication of the DSM-5-TR™. This is then integrated into a broader conversation about the need to locate the DSM-5-TR™ within the larger framework of the clinician's own information-gathering tools, clinical conceptualization skills, and therapeutic application capacities. Themes associated with sociocultural factors, personal identity, and life experience are focal points explored here. In addition, reinforcing the application of ethical decision-making principles and how those relate to case conceptualization and the clinical process is emphasized. The training also reviews important dimensions of using objective assessment tools in clinical practice and provides experiential opportunities to become acquainted with the suite of assessment tools associated with the DSM-5-TR™. Finally, through active practice exercises and group discussion, learners come away from the training with clearer administrative skills designed to support them in often confusing and frustrating necessities of diagnostic coding and insurance billing. NCPD: Clinical Supervision Basics (6-Hour Overview for LPCs and Beyond)

DESCRIPTION: In many jurisdictions, the only legal requirement for providing clinical supervision is having an active mental health license. Although having a keen set of administrative and counseling skills is an essential aspect of clinical supervision, they are not enough on their own. Clinical supervision is a specialized area within the mental health professions that has its own distinct theories, practices, and models; therefore, high-quality clinical supervisors need to understand and apply these effectively. As more states recognize this necessity, the trend of establishing a two-tiered licensure system that first solely permits professional practice within one’s discipline and then only allows for the advanced practice of clinical supervision after additional requirements have been met is becoming more common.
The Colorado State Board of LPC Examiners moved in this direction in 2020, when they mandated that any LPC licensed by the board providing clinical supervision to LPC candidates needed to complete one of four possible training requirements: (1) complete a minimum of a two-credit-hour graduate course on clinical supervision from a CACREP accredited or equivalent program; (2) complete a minimum of six clock-hours of clinical supervision training in specified content areas; (3) attain Approved Clinical Supervisor™ (ACS) certification from the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE); or (4) attain a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP accredited or equivalent program or other counseling doctorates that have a supervision component.
This course meets the second option by providing six clock-hours of clinical supervision training in the seven specified content areas, specifically: (a) the role and functions of clinical supervisors; (b) models and methods of clinical supervision; (c) supervisory relationship issues; (d) cultural issues and themes in clinical supervision; (e) group supervision; (f) legal and ethical issues in clinical supervision; and (g) evaluation of supervisee competency and the supervision process. Registration for this course is complimentary and open to all mental health practitioners.

NCPD: Tending the Business of Psychotherapy

DESCRIPTION: Mental health professionals work in a diverse array of practice settings ranging from not-for-profit community mental health centers to corporate-based hospitals and treatment centers to self-owned individual and group practices. In all of these contexts, having strong clinical skills and a well-defined professional identity are clearly important attributes required by mental health professionals to support the success of and opportunities within their various practice contexts, but they are not enough. In addition to clinical skills and professional identity, strong administrative effectiveness skills and an associated entrepreneurial spirit are also required because they serve as the foundation for allowing the other two skills to flourish. In other words, without good administrative skills, it doesn’t matter how well one does in the other two areas because if the business doesn’t survive, no services can be provided. Unfortunately, most graduate programs focusing on training mental health professionals offer very little if any opportunities to learn about the business side of owning, managing, or even working within the general mental health delivery system and this is often an unrecognized threat to the long-term viability of both the staff and the programs within the mental health delivery system. As a partial remedy for that oversight, this training walks practitioners through some essential administrative practices for successfully establishing and maintaining the business side of a mental health delivery practice or program. These include creating/refining a vision and mission statement, selecting a business structure, developing a business plan, establishing a business budget, setting up business systems (like checking accounts, credit card processing, etc.), understanding human resources, practice marketing and promotion strategies, succession and legacy planning, and much more. During the training, participants work alone and in small groups to develop the tools needed for their individual practice locations and everyone will leave with a treasure chest of resources they can come back to for further exploration and deepening. DESCRIPTION: The Noeticus Integrative Gestalt Therapy - Practice Endorsement™ (NIGT-PE; 45.0 Contact Hours) provides mental health professionals with a basic framework for understanding Gestalt Therapy and beginning to work experientially in the present moment with their clients. In addition, it also provides the three prerequisites necessary for application into the more comprehensive Noeticus Integrative Gestalt Therapy™ - Certification Program (NIGT-CP). Historically, Gestalt Therapy arises from the lineage of somatic psychotherapy and thus having some understanding about how to work with sensation and movement in the therapeutic dyad is quite important. Further, Gestalt Therapy employs the phenomenological approach found in existential philosophy, an approach that appreciates the capacity for self-investigation and working with the tensions between opposite polarities, so some familiarity with existential therapy becomes an important background to have. Finally, the skill of being able to recognize and facilitate the expression of life patterns as they attempt to arise, manifest, and dissipate within the subjective experience of clients is one of the foundational skills explored in Gestalt Therapy and therefore training participants learn more about how to navigate that process through practice with the Gestalt Cycle of Experience. Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - General Information
The Noeticus Center for Professional Development™ (NCPD) at Noeticus Counseling Center and Training Institute® offers a variety of Practice Endorsements (PEs) and Certification Programs (CPs) to mental health professionals and those in related disciplines seeking to deepen their focus in one particular area of practice beyond a singular course. Practice Endorsements are usually either 45.0 or 90.0 contact hours in length and typically are comprised of three, 15-hour classes, though in some cases other combinations are used to total that amount of time.
Practice Endorsements offer course participants the experience of engaging in a mini-sequenced course of study with a learning cohort of like-minded professionals committed to taking the next step in their professional development. The curriculum for each of the endorsements has been carefully and coherently assembled based on thematic similarities in their content and/or application areas. Additionally, the material is shared in a way that reflects contemporary practices in adult learning theory - including both didactic and experiential learning along with ample opportunities for immediate application and building strong and lasting connections with other training participants that extend well beyond the courses themselves. IMPORTANT: Registration for a Professional Endorsement offers open enrollment to any participant, whether through individual courses or full packages.
By contrast, Certification Programs (CPs) require additional components beyond the associated courses, typically including such things as outside practice sessions, clinical consultation/supervision, skills demonstration, and/or a final certification project. In some instances, Practice Endorsements can be applied to partially fulfill the educational requirements for a Certification Program. Certification Programs are more intensive and integrative than Practice Endorsements and thus require more focus and commitment to complete, usually ranging from 100.0 to 150.0 contact hours each. IMPORTANT: Registration for a Certification Program is through application and approval only, thus open enrollment is not possible. Completion of partial credit through a Practice Endorsement does not guarantee placement in a Certification Program, therefore we encourage those interested in going through a Certification Program to apply early. Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - Registration Policies
When course participants register for one of our packages, we try to place them in the first class or training that is part of that series. This helps ensure that all prerequisites are met and also maximizes the possibility of meeting and developing connections with other members of the learning cohort. In some cases, this is not possible due to scheduling conflicts, emergencies, under-enrollment, and other unexpected events. In such cases, we work individually with course participants to transfer them to the next available course or develop an alternative learning plan if necessary. Thus it is important to recognize that registration for an individual course or a particular course package does not guarantee specific placement.
Practice Endorsements and Certification Programs are built into our annual calendar of classes and trainings. Some of them are offered four times a year on a quarterly basis, others are offered twice a year on a semi-annual basis, while others are only offered once a year on an annual basis. Classes and trainings that are part of a Practice Endorsement or Certification Program can be purchased separately or as part of a class or training package. If a package registration is selected, a 20% discount will be automatically deducted from any of the standard registration categories (general, group, military/veteran, student) at the time of purchase. Class and training packages are non-refundable, non-transferable to another person, and be completed within 12 months of the date of purchase (unless other arrangements are made). Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - Final Conferral

DESCRIPTION: Many counselors focus on assisting clients to develop stronger egos, greater self-esteem, and increased interpersonal connection. Though these are admirable goals; when clients experience trauma, loss, or other threats to identity; they are often left feeling hopeless, without purpose, and struggling to create meaning in their life. Existential thought in psychotherapy provides a foundation to meet clients at this life stage by exploring the four elements of “ultimate concern” that lie under the surface of many of these presenting problems. The four ultimate concerns are: 1) Death, 2) Freedom, 3) Isolation, and 4) Meaninglessness. Learning to identify and work with these themes directly can be a powerful resource for mental health professionals on two levels. First, it can serve as a profound lens that frames and gives nuance to many of the surface issues and concerns that clients bring with them into the consulting room. Second, it can help mental health professionals better understand how to tolerate and relate to the existential anxiety experienced by their clients and by themselves with more choice, responsibility, congruent meaning-making, and effective action. DESCRIPTION: The Noeticus Relational and Systemic Approaches - Practice Endorsement™ (NRSA-PE; 45.0 Contact Hours) brings together several of the trainings we provide that explore interpersonal themes within the fabric of larger familial and social structures. In particular, the relationship between individual self-regulation and relational co-regulation is of special interest as aspects of Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) interact with skills-training concepts from Dialectical Behavior Therapy® (DBT®). We also take a look at socioeconomic class and start to unpack the hidden rules that are often associated with coming from or having access to resources at each of the general socioeconomic strata. The distinction between situational and generational poverty is especially examined closely. Additionally, we look at the relationship between styles of attachment in individual relationships as presented in Attachment Theory and how those are influenced by larger social and political determinants of health and mental health as discussed in Relational-Cultural Theory. Finally, participants in this series become acquainted with the Prepare/Enrich® relationship enhancement tool. It is used for both new and long-term couples and helps them identify key strengths and growth areas in their relationship so they can focus their attention and energy on benefitting from their strengths while collaboratively addressing their growth areas. Training participants wishing to do so can become certified facilitators of Prepare/Enrich® after the training. In completing these four trainings, participants not only look at how the themes and issues discussed impact their clients, but also are invited to explore how those same issues show up in their own lives and relationships.

Noeticus Counseling Center and Training Institute® has been approved by NAADAC as an Approved Education Provider (AEP #151584) and NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP #6704). Programs that do not qualify for NAADAC or NBCC credit are clearly identified. All NACCTP trainings are approved by BHA for CAC/LAC credentialing. Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - General Information
The Noeticus Center for Professional Development™ (NCPD) at Noeticus Counseling Center and Training Institute® offers a variety of Practice Endorsements (PEs) and Certification Programs (CPs) to mental health professionals and those in related disciplines seeking to deepen their focus in one particular area of practice beyond a singular course. Practice Endorsements are usually either 45.0 or 90.0 contact hours in length and typically are comprised of three, 15-hour classes, though in some cases other combinations are used to total that amount of time.
Practice Endorsements offer course participants the experience of engaging in a mini-sequenced course of study with a learning cohort of like-minded professionals committed to taking the next step in their professional development. The curriculum for each of the endorsements has been carefully and coherently assembled based on thematic similarities in their content and/or application areas. Additionally, the material is shared in a way that reflects contemporary practices in adult learning theory - including both didactic and experiential learning along with ample opportunities for immediate application and building strong and lasting connections with other training participants that extend well beyond the courses themselves. IMPORTANT: Registration for a Professional Endorsement offers open enrollment to any participant, whether through individual courses or full packages.
By contrast, Certification Programs (CPs) require additional components beyond the associated courses, typically including such things as outside practice sessions, clinical consultation/supervision, skills demonstration, and/or a final certification project. In some instances, Practice Endorsements can be applied to partially fulfill the educational requirements for a Certification Program. Certification Programs are more intensive and integrative than Practice Endorsements and thus require more focus and commitment to complete, usually ranging from 100.0 to 150.0 contact hours each. IMPORTANT: Registration for a Certification Program is through application and approval only, thus open enrollment is not possible. Completion of partial credit through a Practice Endorsement does not guarantee placement in a Certification Program, therefore we encourage those interested in going through a Certification Program to apply early. Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - Registration Policies
When course participants register for one of our packages, we try to place them in the first class or training that is part of that series. This helps ensure that all prerequisites are met and also maximizes the possibility of meeting and developing connections with other members of the learning cohort. In some cases, this is not possible due to scheduling conflicts, emergencies, under-enrollment, and other unexpected events. In such cases, we work individually with course participants to transfer them to the next available course or develop an alternative learning plan if necessary. Thus it is important to recognize that registration for an individual course or a particular course package does not guarantee specific placement.
Practice Endorsements and Certification Programs are built into our annual calendar of classes and trainings. Some of them are offered four times a year on a quarterly basis, others are offered twice a year on a semi-annual basis, while others are only offered once a year on an annual basis. Classes and trainings that are part of a Practice Endorsement or Certification Program can be purchased separately or as part of a class or training package. If a package registration is selected, a 20% discount will be automatically deducted from any of the standard registration categories (general, group, military/veteran, student) at the time of purchase. Class and training packages are non-refundable, non-transferable to another person, and be completed within 12 months of the date of purchase (unless other arrangements are made). Packages cannot be retroactively purchased once sales of individual classes or trainings have been completed, so be sure to select accordingly.
Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - Final Conferral
