Somatic Psychotherapy: Exploring the Role of the Body, Sensation, and Movement in Counseling and Psychotherapy

"Theory and Skills for Working Experientially with the Body"

DESCRIPTION: Our first experiences of who we are come through the sensorimotor channels of our bodies. Our sense of identity is established by the quality of interactions we have with the people in our environment and the way they mirror back to us the type of world in which we live. Through the developmental process we cultivate a more abstract concept of our self, but the original sensorimotor experiences that shaped our identity form a strong template that continues to inform and shape our perceptions and experiences throughout our lives. Somatic psychology is the study of how these patterns of physical and psychological experience inform and interact with one another through complex and interconnected intrapsychic and interpersonal dynamics that we are only beginning to understand through channels of inquiry such as contemporary neuroscience, attachment theory, and intersubjective psychology. Participants in this training learn basic elements of how the body communicates with the self and the environment by exploring some of the fundamental principles of somatic psychology, including the fascinating relationship between sensation on the bodily level and movement expression in the world. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and also as part of the Noeticus Integrative Gestalt Therapy - Practice Endorsement™ (NIGT-PE) and/or the more comprehensive Noeticus Integrative Gestalt Therapy - Certification Program™ (NIGT-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NIGT-PE Course Package. Motivational Interviewing: Guiding Therapeutic Change with a Client-Centered Approach to Transforming Ambivalence

"Digging for Treasure - Together"

DESCRIPTION: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client‐centered collaborative style of conversation designed to strengthen a person’s motivation for and commitment to change. MI is counselor‐guided in that the counselor is skilled at managing ambivalence, eliciting change‐talk, and honoring the client’s autonomy about taking the next step toward a commonly agreed-upon goal” (Miller & Rollnick, 2010). Over 385 studies to date have demonstrated the effectiveness of the model at increasing client engagement, retention, compliance, and improving treatment outcomes. The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) has identified MI as a best practice within the addiction treatment field. The CAC Clinical Training Program at the Colorado Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) is committed to a process of integrating the Motivational Interviewing style, spirit, and strategies into all levels of training and to supporting clinical supervision of motivational interviewing as a counseling style. Additionally, this and all addiction counselor classes seek to enhance the ability of the counselor to offer treatment services in a manner that respects gender, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural, familial, systemic, and socioeconomic diversity. NOTE: This class can be taken independently, as a required course for CAT/CAS/LAC credentialing, and also as part of the Noeticus Addiction and Recovery Therapy: Level 2 - Practice Endorsement™ (NART-PE-2) and/or the more comprehensive Noeticus Addiction and Recovery Therapy - Certification Program™ (NART-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NART-PE-2 Course Package. Co-Occurring Disorders: What to Do When Two (or More) Problems Coalesce

"Using the Clinical Process to Therapeutically Address Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders Happening Together"

DESCRIPTION: This class presents the basics of working with clients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. There is a growing need to recognize and address the interrelationship of these disorders, along with the medical implications for the client, through the use of specialized approaches and integration of treatment. This class addresses clinical assessment, treatment philosophy, intervention strategies, and guidelines for best practices for providing integrated treatment with co-occurring disorders. It includes an introduction to the DSM-5-TR™ diagnostic criteria for the mental disorders most often seen with substance use and behavioral addiction disorders, along with a discussion of the changes to substance use diagnoses that were published with the DSM-5®. The essential values, attitudes, and competencies of the counselor working with this population are also discussed. Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - General Information

The Noeticus Center for Professional Development™ (NCPD) at Noeticus Counseling Center and Training Institute® offers a variety of Practice Endorsements (PEs) and Certification Programs (CPs) to mental health professionals and those in related disciplines seeking to deepen their focus in one particular area of practice beyond a singular course. Practice Endorsements are usually either 45.0 or 90.0 contact hours in length and typically are comprised of three, 15-hour classes, though in some cases other combinations are used to total that amount of time.

Practice Endorsements offer course participants the experience of engaging in a mini-sequenced course of study with a learning cohort of like-minded professionals committed to taking the next step in their professional development. The curriculum for each of the endorsements has been carefully and coherently assembled based on thematic similarities in their content and/or application areas. Additionally, the material is shared in a way that reflects contemporary practices in adult learning theory - including both didactic and experiential learning along with ample opportunities for immediate application and building strong and lasting connections with other training participants that extend well beyond the courses themselves. IMPORTANT: Registration for a Professional Endorsement offers open enrollment to any participant, whether through individual courses or full packages.

By contrast, Certification Programs (CPs) require additional components beyond the associated courses, typically including such things as outside practice sessions, clinical consultation/supervision, skills demonstration, and/or a final certification project. In some instances, Practice Endorsements can be applied to partially fulfill the educational requirements for a Certification Program. Certification Programs are more intensive and integrative than Practice Endorsements and thus require more focus and commitment to complete, usually ranging from 100.0 to 150.0 contact hours each. IMPORTANT: Registration for a Certification Program is through application and approval only, thus open enrollment is not possible. Completion of partial credit through a Practice Endorsement does not guarantee placement in a Certification Program, therefore we encourage those interested in going through a Certification Program to apply early. For more information, please visit the prospective Certification Program website or contact us at training@noeticus.org.

Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - Registration Policies

When course participants register for one of our packages, we try to place them in the first class or training that is part of that series. This helps ensure that all prerequisites are met and also maximizes the possibility of meeting and developing connections with other members of the learning cohort. In some cases, this is not possible due to scheduling conflicts, emergencies, under-enrollment, and other unexpected events. In such cases, we work individually with course participants to transfer them to the next available course or develop an alternative learning plan if necessary. Thus it is important to recognize that registration for an individual course or a particular course package does not guarantee specific placement.

Practice Endorsements and Certification Programs are built into our annual calendar of classes and trainings. Some of them are offered four times a year on a quarterly basis, others are offered twice a year on a semi-annual basis, while others are only offered once a year on an annual basis. Classes and trainings that are part of a Practice Endorsement or Certification Program can be purchased separately or as part of a class or training package. If a package registration is selected, a 20% discount will be automatically deducted from any of the standard registration categories (general, group, military/veteran, student) at the time of purchase. Class and training packages are non-refundable, non-transferable to another person, and be completed within 12 months of the date of purchase (unless other arrangements are made). Packages cannot be retroactively purchased once sales of individual classes or trainings have been completed, so be sure to select accordingly.

Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - Final Conferral

For both Practice Endorsements and Certification Programs, each course participant must submit an application to receive the final endorsement or certification once all requirements have been fulfilled, as this is not automatic. The application can be downloaded HERE.

Payment plan available: $200 deposit plus 8 payments of $57.77, paid every four weeks. Final payment of $57.84.

Creative Systems Theory (CST): A Powerful Framework for Engaging Generative Processes in Therapy, Leadership, and Beyond

"Discovering New Narratives through Recognizing and Understanding Pattern and Reality"

DESCRIPTION: Creative Systems Theory (CST) is a deepening of contemporary systems theory that was developed by psychiatrist Charles Johnston at the Institute for Creative Development in Seattle, Washington, USA. Creative Systems Theory takes all of the basic premises of General Systems Theory (GST) and adds to it a discussion about how the formative process of inspiration, creation, manifestation, and integration affects all components in an organic, nonlinear, non-mechanistic way. As a strong believer in the need to see old problems in new ways, Johnston developed CST by integrating systems theory with much of the contemporary wisdom found in such diverse areas of study as physics, postmodern philosophy, biology, psychology, diversity studies, spirituality, economics, and the arts. Creative Systems Theory can be used as a powerful framework for assessing many dimensions of a client's therapeutic journey and is especially useful as tool for supporting and engaging clients in the creative process. It can also be a helpful resource for framing learning in diverse educational contexts and for encouraging skill acquisition and mastery at both the personal and professional levels. For this reason, it can serve as an excellent template for supporting graduate students and mental health professionals through various journeys such as writing papers and reports, completing internship and post-graduate training, completing certification programs, and even launching businesses. This experiential training acquaints participants with the CST arc of creative development and invites an appreciation for the gifts and challenges that are associated with each of the phases. As course participants explore each of the points in the creative cycle, they are invited to see the world through the different types of intelligences that are highlighted at each stage of development. They are also encouraged to recognize how all of the phases in creative process work are connected in intricate and potentially inexplicable ways, a phenomenon that Johnston described as creative causality. Creative causality is a fundamental force that guides living systems that is neither mechanistic nor mystical in nature. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and also as part of the Noeticus Organizational and Leadership Development: Level 2 - Practice Endorsement™ (NOLD-PE-2); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NOLD-PE-2 Course Package. Tending the Business of Psychotherapy: Launching and Growing a Thriving Solo or Group Practice

"Building a Solid Structure from the Ground Up Using the Noeticus Training and Practice Triangle™ as a Structural Framework"

DESCRIPTION: Mental health professionals work in a diverse array of practice settings ranging from not-for-profit community mental health centers to corporate-based hospitals and treatment centers to self-owned individual and group practices. In all of these contexts, having strong clinical skills and a well-defined professional identity are clearly important attributes required by mental health professionals to support the success of and opportunities within their various practice contexts, but they are not enough. In addition to clinical skills and professional identity, strong administrative effectiveness skills and an associated entrepreneurial spirit are also required because they serve as the foundation for allowing the other two skills to flourish. In other words, without good administrative skills, it doesn’t matter how well one does in the other two areas because if the business doesn’t survive, no services can be provided. Unfortunately, most graduate programs focusing on training mental health professionals offer very little if any opportunities to learn about the business side of owning, managing, or even working within the general mental health delivery system and this is often an unrecognized threat to the long-term viability of both the staff and the programs within the mental health delivery system. As a partial remedy for that oversight, this training walks practitioners through some essential administrative practices for successfully establishing and maintaining the business side of a mental health delivery practice or program. These include creating/refining a vision and mission statement, selecting a business structure, developing a business plan, establishing a business budget, setting up business systems (like checking accounts, credit card processing, etc.), understanding human resources, practice marketing and promotion strategies, succession and legacy planning, and much more. During the training, participants work alone and in small groups to develop the tools needed for their individual practice locations and everyone will leave with a treasure chest of resources they can come back to for further exploration and deepening. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and also as part of the Noeticus Administrative and Business Effectiveness - Practice Endorsement™ (NABE-PE) and/or the more comprehensive Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice - Certification Program™ (NCTP-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NABE-PE Course Package. PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: The Noeticus Trauma-Informed Care: Level 2 - Practice Endorsement™ (NTIC-PE-2; 45.0 Contact Hours) is specifically tailored to support mental health professionals in being effective in their treatment of psychological abuse, neglect, and trauma rather than being well-meaning in the moment, but perhaps not so helpful in the long term. Too often, good intentions not supported with keen understanding and honed skills lead to a repetition or re-experiencing of trauma rather than its resolution. The first level of this series introduces how situational, generational, and institutional difficulty accessing resources serve as both a cause and an effect of trauma. It also brings the relationship between trauma and addiction to the foreground. Finally, it identifies and explores the key principles of establishing and delivering trauma-informed care. The second level of the series brings in the importance of culture and connection as a protective factor in addressing trauma, how Dialectical Behavior Therapy® fits into a trauma-informed treatment approach, and finally incorporates contemporary concepts from neuroscience to support both a better understanding of the origins of trauma and its treatment. For those interested in pursuing more comprehensive training in understanding and treating psychological trauma, the Noeticus Trauma-Informed Care – Certification Program™ (NTIC-CP) is an excellent option.

DESCRIPTION: The central nervous system (CNS), made up of the brain and spinal cord, plays a key role in how our clients perceive, experience, and respond to the world around them. Though hereditary elements and biological predispositions have a significant impact on the functioning of the central nervous system and the subsequent experience of the self, it is also incredibly influenced by a variety of environmental factors such as early experience, social learning, schedules of punishment and reinforcement, current stressors, and availability of resources such as nutrition and medical care. Because all psychotherapy is essential working with the experience of the self - vis-a-vis the reshaping of the central nervous system - it is incumbent on all of us as mental health professionals to have a foundational understanding of the key structures and functions that comprise the central nervous system, how they work together and with the other systems of the body to regulate the individual, and how they can be influenced through psychotherapy to help our clients more effectively reach their mental health-related goals. Through engaging and experiential activities, learners in this training begin with exploring the philosophical relationship between the brain and the mind. They then gain a better understanding of the structures, systems, and functions of the brain and how these relate to the four core theoretical forces in psychotherapy: 1) analytic, 2) cognitive/behavioral, 3) humanistic/existential, and 4) contextual/constructivist. In addition, this training also focuses on applied neuroscience as it relates to the treatment of anxiety, depression, stress and trauma, and addictions and substance use disorders. Finally, learners explore some of the limitations of contemporary neuroscience and how a lack of understanding in this area by uninformed mental health professionals can lead to misinformation and ineffective clinical practice. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and also as part of the Noeticus Science and Technical Excellence - Practice Endorsement™ (NSTE-PE); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NSTE-PE Course Package.
