DESCRIPTION: Dialectical Behavior Therapy® (DBT®) is a skills-based, psychoeducational model designed to help clients learn and practice basic tools for managing compulsive, addictive, and self-harming behaviors; intrusive thoughts; intense or overwhelming feelings; chronic feelings of emptiness; ongoing relationship crises; and other painful experiences. Rooted in principles of mindfulness practice, existential philosophy, developmental psychology, and cognitive/behavioral therapy, DBT® skills training is particularly helpful to clients in the early stages of any kind of recovery process or those who find themselves stuck in destructive patterns that are hard to break, though its current applications far exceed that historical focus. This training introduces the theoretical framework of DBT® and the Four Basic Skills Modules that clients learn in DBT® Skills Training. These are: 1) Mindfulness; 2) Distress Tolerance; 3) Emotion Regulation; and 4) Interpersonal Effectiveness. Integrative Gestalt Therapy™: Foundational Principles for Working Experientially in Counseling and Psychotherapy

DESCRIPTION: Gestalt Therapy is a somatically-oriented, experiential therapy deeply rooted in Humanistic and Existential psychology that has significantly influenced and shaped many contemporary forms of psychotherapy. Developed by Fritz and Laura Perls, Gestalt Therapy draws wisdom from many traditions including psychoanalysis, Jungian psychology, existential philosophy, Zen Buddhism, and theater improvisation. Participants in this training learn the fundamental principles of the Gestalt approach, both as a primary therapeutic modality and as a perceptual framework that can be applied to other theoretical orientations. In particular, the Gestalt Cycle of Experience will be explored as a potent model for recognizing and understanding how needs arise in the phenomenological field and how those needs can be effectively addressed. Clinical Supervision II: Advanced Concepts and Skills for Mental Health Professionals

"Transforming Accidental Intervention into Deliberate Oversight"

DESCRIPTION: In Colorado (and many other states), the only legal requirement to provide clinical supervision is having an active mental health license. Because of that, many mental health practitioners become clinical supervisors immediately upon receiving their licenses without having any additional training in the specialized counseling practice of clinical supervision. Functionally, this often translates into new supervisors using counseling skills to work with new supervisees instead of supervision skills, a scenario that isn't always very effective or even helpful. As an antidote to this serious problem within all of the mental health professions, the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE); An affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors [NBCC]) developed the voluntary Approved Clinical Supervisor™ (ACS™) credential. This training is the first part of a three-part series covering the theory and practice of clinical supervision, all of which (when taken together) meet the training requirements for the ACS™ through the CCE. During our Clinical Supervision I training, participants learn the theoretical foundations. During our Clinical Supervision II training, participants build upon their theoretical foundations and add to them practical skills. Culture and Connection: Social and Political Determinants Underlying the Secure Base

"How Relational-Cultural Theory Interacts with Attachment Theory"

DESCRIPTION: Raising emotionally intelligent, well-adjusted children who are able to respond effectively to the demands of a complex world is no easy task. Determining whether one's child-rearing styles and goals are implicit or explicit and linking those to whose needs are being prioritized can be a delicate and tricky business because it's easy to unknowingly insert one's biases about what constitutes effective parenting into the process without adequately taking into account how one's early experiences, memories, and emotions helped shape those biases. Put simply, how one raises a child today has a lot to do with how they themselves were raised and how they were raised had a lot to do with what their own caregivers had in terms of resources and obstacles. Did their caregivers have the capacity to provide a safe, stable, and nourishing environment for them? If so, what were the factors that accounted for that experience. If not, why not? Was it related to individual or collective dimensions of their caregivers identity or both? This training investigates how the underlying capacity for caregivers (and by extension mental health professionals) to understand and manage the diverse and complex dimensions of their own personal identity - especially in terms of how they relate to institutional power and privilege - can serve as a protective factor or risk factor associated with the social and political determinants of health and mental health associated with their children (or clients). We use John Bowlby's Attachment Theory (AT) to provide important context as to what individual developmental needs children (or clients) have for a safe, stable, and nourishing emotional environment. At the same time, we draw from Jean Baker Miller's Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) to offer a more nuanced perspective on understanding how the intersectional aspects of personal identity within the collective experience interface with institutional privilege in critical ways that shape the capacity of caregivers (or mental health professionals) to more effectively attend to these developmental needs. In particular, we unpack how secure attachment is a form of unearned privilege, known as "attachment privilege," that is affected by and simultaneously affects multiple variables in the caregiver and child dyad (and also the mental health professional and client dyad). Spiral Dynamics® II: Applying Clare Graves' Emergent Cyclical Levels of Existence Theory (ECLET) Model to the Personal and Organizational Change Process

"Deepening into the Dynamic Intersection of Life Conditions and Mind Capacities"

DESCRIPTION: Spiral Dynamics® (SD) refers to the colorful way in which change consultants Chris Cowan and Don Beck came to call Emergent Cyclical Levels of Existence Theory (ECLET), a theory that was originally generated by developmental psychologist Clare W. Graves, PhD and later adapted by contemporary philosopher Ken Wilber as part of his Integral Approach. In essence, it is a progressive model of human development that explores how life circumstances shape thought processes and what the value systems are that give those experiences meaning. In the first part of this engaging two-part experiential class series (Spiral Dynamics® I), participants are introduced to the basic elements of the model, which provides context for understanding how "value-holding systems" are associated with motivation, beliefs, and behaviors. The second part of the series focuses on applying these concepts specifically to individual and organizational change (Spiral Dynamics® II).
