DESCRIPTION: Current approaches to psychotherapy practice tend to emphasize the importance of modality or technique in achieving desired client outcomes. Mental health practitioners are typically concerned with "what" to do in order to support their clients in achieving their therapeutic goals. This view is supported by clinical supervisors who often over-focus on strengthening clinician skills through listening to narrative self-reporting by the practitioner followed by offering counsel or guidance as the key to improving client outcomes. The research on client outcomes tells a different story though. Indeed, reaching consistent and robust client outcomes is more a function of "how" the mental health practitioner interacts with the client rather than what types of skills or interventions are used. For instance, the research on common factors that lead to significant change across all behavioral health modalities indicates that relational factors between the practitioner and client have an average impact of about 30% whereas clinician modality or technique only accounts for about 15% of the change - the same amount of change accounted for by hope, expectancy, and other placebo-like variables. The greatest amount of change, at about 40%, is attributed to factors occurring in the client's life outside of the therapeutic relationship. With that in mind, it seems clear that both clinicians and their supervisors will have the greatest impact on positive client outcomes by attending first to relational factors that solidify engagement between practitioner and client followed by a focus on clinician competency development. This is where Feedback-Informed Treatment (FIT) and Deliberate Practice (DP) become important components of treatment. FIT is an evidence-based approach to evaluating and improving the quality and effectiveness of the therapeutic relationship developed by psychologist, Scott D. Miller, PhD. FIT tracks both the overall results of the therapeutic work across sessions along with the quality of the therapeutic relationship within each session so that modifications can be made early and more easily. Deliberate Practice is an approach to skill mastery that relies on practicing at the edge of one's ability using regular and active feedback spaced across time to achieve mastery. DESCRIPTION: Assessment, diagnosis, and intervention are a set of overlapping and integrated skills referred to as the "Clinical Process" in this dynamic training designed for new and advanced clinicians. Training participants first review the history of the DSM® and the historical contexts, cultural factors, and clinical trends associated with the publication of the DSM-5-TR™. This is then integrated into a broader conversation about the need to locate the DSM-5-TR™ within the larger framework of the clinician's own information-gathering tools, clinical conceptualization skills, and therapeutic application capacities. Themes associated with sociocultural factors, personal identity, and life experience are focal points explored here. In addition, reinforcing the application of ethical decision-making principles and how those relate to case conceptualization and the clinical process is emphasized. DESCRIPTION: Raising emotionally intelligent, well-adjusted children who are able to respond effectively to the demands of a complex world is no easy task. Determining whether one's child-rearing styles and goals are implicit or explicit and linking those to whose needs are being prioritized can be a delicate and tricky business because it's easy to unknowingly insert one's biases about what constitutes effective parenting into the process without adequately taking into account how one's early experiences, memories, and emotions helped shape those biases. Put simply, how one raises a child today has a lot to do with how they themselves were raised and how they were raised had a lot to do with what their own caregivers had in terms of resources and obstacles. Did their caregivers have the capacity to provide a safe, stable, and nourishing environment for them? If so, what were the factors that accounted for that experience. If not, why not? Was it related to individual or collective dimensions of their caregivers identity or both? This training investigates how the underlying capacity for caregivers (and by extension mental health professionals) to understand and manage the diverse and complex dimensions of their own personal identity - especially in terms of how they relate to institutional power and privilege - can serve as a protective factor or risk factor associated with the social and political determinants of health and mental health associated with their children (or clients). We use John Bowlby's Attachment Theory (AT) to provide important context as to what individual developmental needs children (or clients) have for a safe, stable, and nourishing emotional environment. At the same time, we draw from Jean Baker Miller's Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) to offer a more nuanced perspective on understanding how the intersectional aspects of personal identity within the collective experience interface with institutional privilege in critical ways that shape the capacity of caregivers (or mental health professionals) to more effectively attend to these developmental needs. In particular, we unpack how secure attachment is a form of unearned privilege, known as "attachment privilege," that is affected by and simultaneously affects multiple variables in the caregiver and child dyad (and also the mental health professional and client dyad). NACCTP: Trauma-Informed Care for Diverse Populations

DESCRIPTION: This class will introduce the counselor to the concept of trauma-informed care, an approach that is being adopted more frequently within the human services fields based upon an increased awareness of the ways in which trauma impacts functioning. It will describe and define what trauma-informed care is and ways in which a traditional treatment setting can be modified to increase the sense of safety experienced by clients. DESCRIPTION: In Colorado (and many other states), the only legal requirement to provide clinical supervision is having an active mental health license. Because of that, many mental health practitioners become clinical supervisors immediately upon receiving their licenses without having any additional training in the specialized counseling practice of clinical supervision. Functionally, this often translates into new supervisors using counseling skills to work with new supervisees instead of supervision skills, a scenario that isn't always very effective or even helpful. As an antidote to this serious problem within all of the mental health professions, the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE); An affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors [NBCC]) developed the voluntary Approved Clinical Supervisor™ (ACS™) credential. NCPD: Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals

DESCRIPTION: Though it is important to stay within our scope of practice as mental health professionals, we often find ourselves in situations where having some basic information about psychotropic medications and/or other psychoactive substances can be quite useful. With this knowledge, we become better advocates for our clients with other medical and mental health professionals as well as collaborators with our own clients. Such knowledge includes how medications and other substances are introduced into the body, how they are metabolized and distributed throughout the body, and finally how they are excreted. It also requires a working understanding of how medications and other substances affect the central nervous system, their short and long term effects on other body systems, as well as how they interact with one another. Using an engaging and participatory learning format, participants in this training learn the major classifications of psychotropic medications and psychoactive substances, gain a better understanding of how neurons and neurotransmitters work within the central nervous system, and become better acquainted with common side effects and adverse reactions to be watching for with their clients. In particular, this training focuses on antidepressants (e.g. MAO inhibitors, SNRIs, SSRIs, tricyclics, etc.), antipsychotics (typical and atypical neuroleptics), anxiolytics (e.g. barbiturates, benzodiazepines, etc.), mood-stabilizers (lithium, anticonvulsants, etc.), and cognitive enhancers/anti-ADHDs (psychostimulants, SNRIs, beta-blockers, etc.). We will look at some “off label” uses of these common psychotropic medications for other psychological symptoms or psychiatric diagnoses. Participants also learn about the DEA’s schedule of drugs and the most common psychoactive substances - including central nervous system depressants, central nervous system stimulants, opiates/opioids, hallucinogens, cannabis/cannabinoids, inhalants, anabolic steroids, designer drugs, and a few others. Additionally, MAT or medication-assisted treatment options for some addictive substances and/or behaviors is then explored (e.g. NRT, bupropion, naltrexone, buprenorphine, methadone, etc.). NCPD: Creative Systems Theory

DESCRIPTION: Creative Systems Theory (CST) is a deepening of contemporary systems theory that was developed by psychiatrist Charles Johnston at the Institute for Creative Development in Seattle, Washington, USA. Creative Systems Theory takes all of the basic premises of General Systems Theory (GST) and adds to it a discussion about how the formative process of inspiration, creation, manifestation, and integration affects all components in an organic, nonlinear, non-mechanistic way. As a strong believer in the need to see old problems in new ways, Johnston developed CST by integrating systems theory with much of the contemporary wisdom found in such diverse areas of study as physics, postmodern philosophy, biology, psychology, diversity studies, spirituality, economics, and the arts. Creative Systems Theory can be used as a powerful framework for assessing many dimensions of a client's therapeutic journey and is especially useful as tool for supporting and engaging clients in the creative process. It can also be a helpful resource for framing learning in diverse educational contexts and for encouraging skill acquisition and mastery at both the personal and professional levels. For this reason, it can serve as an excellent template for supporting graduate students and mental health professionals through various journeys such as writing papers and reports, completing internship and post-graduate training, completing certification programs, and even launching businesses. This experiential training acquaints participants with the CST arc of creative development and invites an appreciation for the gifts and challenges that are associated with each of the phases. As course participants explore each of the points in the creative cycle, they are invited to see the world through the different types of intelligences that are highlighted at each stage of development. They are also encouraged to recognize how all of the phases in creative process work are connected in intricate and potentially inexplicable ways, a phenomenon that Johnston described as creative causality.
