Developing a Training Program: Creating a Successful Internship or Clinical Training Experience

DESCRIPTION: As part of their desire to give back to the next generation of practitioners, or perhaps out of a commitment to social justice and serving under-resourced populations, or maybe even as a strategy for growing their business or program, many mental health professionals find themselves at some point in their career where they are essentially running a training program. This can happen both willingly or reluctantly as well as intentionally or accidentally. Of course, the most successful combination is choosing to willingly create or manage a training program in a way that intentionally or deliberately takes into account the growth and development of trainees across the arc of time in which they are training. Many people equate such training programs with pre-graduation requirements such as practicum and internship placements, which of course is accurate. At the same time, however, it's important to consider that a training program might also apply to licensure candidates who are post-graduate but pre-licensure, newly hired staff or employees, new teams of seasoned professionals working together in a different way, and many other such configurations. Using the Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice Triangle™ as a structural guide, and building on the developmental and integrative models of supervision explored in Clinical Supervision I, Clinical Supervision II, and Clinical Supervision III (which are prerequisites for this training), this advanced training supports managers and supervisors who want to start a training program - or who are already running a training program - in setting things up so that important administrative, clinical, and professional benchmarks are met in a developmentally-sequenced and coherent fashion. The course is divided into three functional domains: 1) getting things off to a good start with an emphasis on the supervisor activating the teacher role; 2) helping things deepen and grow with an emphasis on the supervisor using the counselor role; and 3) bringing things to an integrated and meaningful closure with an emphasis on the supervisor enlisting the consultant role. There will be a plethora of ideas and resources shared that are pertinent to each of these training domains and course participants will also have the opportunity to work alone and in teams to generate some of their own ideas based on the hopes, needs, and goals they have for their own various training programs. Culture and Connection: Social and Political Determinants Underlying the Secure Base

"How Relational-Cultural Theory Interacts with Attachment Theory"

DESCRIPTION: Raising emotionally intelligent, well-adjusted children who are able to respond effectively to the demands of a complex world is no easy task. Determining whether one's child-rearing styles and goals are implicit or explicit and linking those to whose needs are being prioritized can be a delicate and tricky business because it's easy to unknowingly insert one's biases about what constitutes effective parenting into the process without adequately taking into account how one's early experiences, memories, and emotions helped shape those biases. Put simply, how one raises a child today has a lot to do with how they themselves were raised and how they were raised had a lot to do with what their own caregivers had in terms of resources and obstacles. Did their caregivers have the capacity to provide a safe, stable, and nourishing environment for them? If so, what were the factors that accounted for that experience. If not, why not? Was it related to individual or collective dimensions of their caregivers identity or both? This training investigates how the underlying capacity for caregivers (and by extension mental health professionals) to understand and manage the diverse and complex dimensions of their own personal identity - especially in terms of how they relate to institutional power and privilege - can serve as a protective factor or risk factor associated with the social and political determinants of health and mental health associated with their children (or clients). We use John Bowlby's Attachment Theory (AT) to provide important context as to what individual developmental needs children (or clients) have for a safe, stable, and nourishing emotional environment. At the same time, we draw from Jean Baker Miller's Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) to offer a more nuanced perspective on understanding how the intersectional aspects of personal identity within the collective experience interface with institutional privilege in critical ways that shape the capacity of caregivers (or mental health professionals) to more effectively attend to these developmental needs. In particular, we unpack how secure attachment is a form of unearned privilege, known as "attachment privilege," that is affected by and simultaneously affects multiple variables in the caregiver and child dyad (and also the mental health professional and client dyad). DESCRIPTION: This class will introduce the counselor to the concept of trauma-informed care, an approach that is being adopted more frequently within the human services fields based upon an increased awareness of the ways in which trauma impacts functioning. It will describe and define what trauma-informed care is and ways in which a traditional treatment setting can be modified to increase the sense of safety experienced by clients. DESCRIPTION: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based practice originally developed for the treatment of substance use disorders, but has been found to support many other types of behavioral change as well. MI focuses on exploring and resolving therapeutic ambivalence by engaging motivational processes within the client that facilitate change. By looking at the change process that clients are embarking upon as one that has both positive and negative attributes, the MI approach has the tendency to dispel power struggles between therapist and client and dissolve notions such as "resistance" and "non-compliance." Because only about 10-15% of the people wanting to make a change are actually at a place where they are ready, willing, and able to make those changes, it is crucial for mental health professionals to have an understanding of what the change process looks like, how to assess clients for their stage of change, and determine the therapeutic skills and interventions that are most effective at each stage of change. Motivational Interviewing provides just such a framework and therefore significantly increases the chances of making a positive impact on the other 85-90% of individuals who are involved in the change process. NOTE: This training is not BHA-approved and cannot be taken to meet CAC/LAC requirements. Clinical Supervision III: Experiential Application and Integration for Mental Health Professionals

"Transforming Accidental Intervention into Deliberate Oversight"

DESCRIPTION: In Colorado (and many other states), the only legal requirement to provide clinical supervision is having an active mental health license. Because of that, many mental health practitioners become clinical supervisors immediately upon receiving their licenses without having any additional training in the specialized counseling practice of clinical supervision. Functionally, this often translates into new supervisors using counseling skills to work with new supervisees instead of supervision skills, a scenario that isn't always very effective or even helpful. As an antidote to this serious problem within all of the mental health professions, the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE); An affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors [NBCC]) developed the voluntary Approved Clinical Supervisor™ (ACS™) credential. This training is the final part of a three-part series covering the theory and practice of clinical supervision, all of which (when taken together) meet the training requirements for the ACS™ through the CCE. DESCRIPTION: In adult relationships, difficulties with self-regulation are often rooted in problems with early invalidating environments, but invalidating environments in adult relationships can be fostered and often exacerbated by pervasive disruptions in self-regulation. This is a dangerous trap that can snare many unwary couples. Ideally, adult partners would be able to turn toward one another for validation and comfort when intense emotions arise using tools that facilitate clear connection. Frequently, however, this healthy urge for connection is communicated in distorted ways because there is a perceived or real threat to the underlying structure of the relationship that doesn’t convey a sense of “safe haven.” The result of that dynamic is an all too common scenario in which, “just when your partner most needs you to connect, it is often the most difficult time to do so.” In that moment, a dual set of skills becomes very useful, those being the complementary skills of self-regulation and relational co-regulation. Learning to recognize and apply self-regulation skills within the context of relational co-regulation can be a tricky business though. Both sets of skills are necessary for healthy, securely attached adult relationships and often therapists gravitate toward one side of the equation at the expense of the other depending on their individual theoretical orientations. This training is designed to highlight the utility and necessity of both skill sets and aptly place them in a dialectical framework with one another. This training emphasizes the importance of balancing individual self-regulation skills within the context of relational co-regulation.
