with Ryan Kennedy, PsyD, LP, LAC, LMFT, LPC, ACS
DBT® Facilitator Training: Facilitator Training for Mental Health Professionals
"Learning the DBT® Skills Training Curriculum"
DESCRIPTION: Dialectical Behavior Therapy® (DBT®) is a skills-based, psychoeducational model designed to help clients learn and practice basic tools for managing compulsive, addictive, and self-harming behaviors; intrusive thoughts; intense or overwhelming feelings; chronic feelings of emptiness; ongoing relationship crises; and other painful experiences. Rooted in principles of mindfulness practice, existential philosophy, developmental psychology, and cognitive/behavioral therapy, DBT® skills training is particularly helpful to clients in the early stages of any kind of recovery process or those who find themselves stuck in destructive patterns that are hard to break, though its current applications far exceed that historical focus. This training introduces the theoretical framework of DBT® and the Four Basic Skills Modules that clients learn in DBT® Skills Training. These are: 1) Mindfulness; 2) Distress Tolerance; 3) Emotion Regulation; and 4) Interpersonal Effectiveness. It also reviews the Auxiliary Modules that include the General Skills and Middle Path or Dialectical Thinking Skills. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and also as part of the Noeticus Evidence-Based Approaches - Practice Endorsement™ (NEBA-PE) and/or the more comprehensive Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice - Certification Program™ (NCTP-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NEBA-PE Course Package. Ethical Practice in Addiction Treatment: Foundational Principles and Skills for Preventing Harm while Creating Benefit
"Supporting Counselors in Thinking Critically about Their Clinical Work, Not Just Telling Them What to Do"
DESCRIPTION: This training focuses on professional and ethical issues specific to the practice of addiction counseling and the treatment of co-occurring disorders. This training builds and strengthens the student's knowledge of NAADAC’s Code of Ethics, along with federal and state rules and regulations that are essential for safe practice. In this class, students are exposed to the Colorado Mental Health Practice Act including the prohibited activities, 42 CFR Part 2, and HIPAA that regulate the practice of psychotherapy including addiction counseling. Students learn about the important roles and activities of the Colorado BHA (Behavioral Health Administration) and DORA (Department of Regulatory Agencies). Students additionally learn the process of certification, licensure, and credentialing to practice in Colorado legally. There is an emphasis on developing critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills. Students also learn about the differences between privacy and confidentiality, and exceptions to confidentiality. Additionally, this and all addiction counselor classes seek to enhance the ability of the counselor to offer treatment services in a manner that respects gender, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural, familial, systemic, and socioeconomic diversity. NACCTP: Advanced Pharmacology
with Ryan Kennedy, PsyD, LP, LAC, MAC, RN, ACS
Advanced Pharmacology: Further Understanding Drugs of Abuse and Their Impact on Human Physiology and Behavior
"Treating Drug Actions, Effects, and Implications"
DESCRIPTION: Neuroscience and genetic research on addiction continue to make significant progress toward understanding the changes in the brain that underlie drug use and behaviors. The research has the potential to significantly affect both the way in which we think about addiction and those who suffer from it. Addictive drugs have habit-forming actions that can be localized to a variety of brain regions that can activate the reward and seeking circuitry in the brain. This class explores the neurobiological basis of addiction and how addictive drugs produce neurochemical changes in the brain’s reward pathway. It will also explore new technologies for treatment and prevention based on brain science. Additionally, functional changes to the brain and the brain’s ability to recover after exposure to drugs of abuse, medical problems associated with substance abuse, and the use of pharmacological assists in recovery will be discussed. Finally, this and all addiction counselor classes seek to enhance the ability of the counselor to offer treatment services in a manner that respects gender, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural, familial, systemic, and socioeconomic diversity. NCPD: Clinical Supervision II (ACS™)
with Ryan Kennedy, PsyD, LP, LAC, LMFT, LPC, ACS
Clinical Supervision II: Advanced Concepts and Skills for Mental Health Professionals
"Transforming Accidental Intervention into Deliberate Oversight"
DESCRIPTION: In Colorado (and many other states), the only legal requirement to provide clinical supervision is having an active mental health license. Because of that, many mental health practitioners become clinical supervisors immediately upon receiving their licenses without having any additional training in the specialized counseling practice of clinical supervision. Functionally, this often translates into new supervisors using counseling skills to work with new supervisees instead of supervision skills, a scenario that isn't always very effective or even helpful. As an antidote to this serious problem within all of the mental health professions, the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE); An affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors [NBCC]) developed the voluntary Approved Clinical Supervisor™ (ACS™) credential. This training is the first part of a three-part series covering the theory and practice of clinical supervision, all of which (when taken together) meet the training requirements for the ACS™ through the CCE. During our Clinical Supervision I training, participants learn the theoretical foundations. During our Clinical Supervision II training, participants build upon their theoretical foundations and add to them practical skills. Finally, during our Clinical Supervision III training, participants integrate the principles and theory they learned in Clinical Supervision I with the advanced concepts and skills taught in Clinical Supervision II and apply them in an experiential format. NOTE: This training can be taken independently, as an educational requirement for ACS™ Certification through the CCE, and also as part of the Noeticus Intentional Clinical Supervision: Level 1 - Professional Endorsement™ (NICS-PE-1) and/or the more comprehensive Noeticus Intentional Clinical Supervision - Certification Program™ (NICS-CP); Save 20% by purchasing the complete NICS-PE-1 Course Package. DESCRIPTION: The Noeticus Administrative and Business Effectiveness - Practice Endorsement™ (NABE-PE; 45.0 Contact Hours) is one of four practice endorsements designed around the Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice Triangle™, which is introduced and discussed extensively in all of our clinical supervision classes and trainings. The Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice Triangle™ posits that the "Self of the Therapist" in the middle of the triangle influences and in turn is influenced by the three outside points of the triangle: 1) Administrative Effectiveness and Entrepreneurial Spirit; 2) Clinical Skills and Theoretical Orientation; and 3) Professional Identity. The model goes on to emphasize that when these four domains are intentionally developed and working together smoothly, the chances of experiencing a successful, rewarding, and long-lasting career are greatly amplified.
To support that goal, we are delighted to offer the following Practice Endorsements, derived from the Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice Triangle™, in support of mental health professionals, managers, and supervisors wishing to extend and fortify their clinical skills in those key domains of clinical practice. The practice endorsements are as follows:
- 4a - Noeticus Administrative and Business Effectiveness - Practice Endorsement™ (NABE-PE; 45.0 Contact Hours)
- 4b - Noeticus Evidence-Based Approaches - Practice Endorsement™ (NEBA-PE; 45.0 Contact Hours)

- 4d - Noeticus Caring for the Self of the Therapist - Practice Endorsement™ (NCST-PE; 45.0 Contact Hours)
More specifically, the Noeticus Administrative and Business Effectiveness - Practice Endorsement™ (NABE-PE; 45.0 Contact Hours) is designed for mental health professionals, managers, and supervisors who want to learn some of the key skills and attitudes associated with successfully navigating the logistical elements of a counseling practice or program - whether independently or as part of a larger system or organization. The series provides multiple resources and templates for creating a successful internship or training program, developing and building a counseling practice or team, as well as tools for monitoring and maintaining progress. This training package provides 45.0 contact hours of course content over the sequence of three, 15-hour trainings and is offered once per calendar year. The three training intensives are designed to be completed in three months, but can be extended up to 12 months. The courses that comprise each of the individual Practice Endorsements listed above constitute the educational requirement for the Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice - Certification Program™ (NCTP-CP). Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - General Information
The Noeticus Center for Professional Development™ (NCPD) at Noeticus Counseling Center and Training Institute® offers a variety of Practice Endorsements (PEs) and Certification Programs (CPs) to mental health professionals and those in related disciplines seeking to deepen their focus in one particular area of practice beyond a singular course. Practice Endorsements are usually either 45.0 or 90.0 contact hours in length and typically are comprised of three, 15-hour classes, though in some cases other combinations are used to total that amount of time.
Practice Endorsements offer course participants the experience of engaging in a mini-sequenced course of study with a learning cohort of like-minded professionals committed to taking the next step in their professional development. The curriculum for each of the endorsements has been carefully and coherently assembled based on thematic similarities in their content and/or application areas. Additionally, the material is shared in a way that reflects contemporary practices in adult learning theory - including both didactic and experiential learning along with ample opportunities for immediate application and building strong and lasting connections with other training participants that extend well beyond the courses themselves. IMPORTANT: Registration for a Professional Endorsement offers open enrollment to any participant, whether through individual courses or full packages.
By contrast, Certification Programs (CPs) require additional components beyond the associated courses, typically including such things as outside practice sessions, clinical consultation/supervision, skills demonstration, and/or a final certification project. In some instances, Practice Endorsements can be applied to partially fulfill the educational requirements for a Certification Program. Certification Programs are more intensive and integrative than Practice Endorsements and thus require more focus and commitment to complete, usually ranging from 100.0 to 150.0 contact hours each. IMPORTANT: Registration for a Certification Program is through application and approval only, thus open enrollment is not possible. Completion of partial credit through a Practice Endorsement does not guarantee placement in a Certification Program, therefore we encourage those interested in going through a Certification Program to apply early. For more information, please visit the prospective Certification Program website or contact us at training@noeticus.org.
Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - Registration Policies
When course participants register for one of our packages, we try to place them in the first class or training that is part of that series. This helps ensure that all prerequisites are met and also maximizes the possibility of meeting and developing connections with other members of the learning cohort. In some cases, this is not possible due to scheduling conflicts, emergencies, under-enrollment, and other unexpected events. In such cases, we work individually with course participants to transfer them to the next available course or develop an alternative learning plan if necessary. Thus it is important to recognize that registration for an individual course or a particular course package does not guarantee specific placement.
Practice Endorsements and Certification Programs are built into our annual calendar of classes and trainings. Some of them are offered four times a year on a quarterly basis, others are offered twice a year on a semi-annual basis, while others are only offered once a year on an annual basis. Classes and trainings that are part of a Practice Endorsement or Certification Program can be purchased separately or as part of a class or training package. If a package registration is selected, a 20% discount will be automatically deducted from any of the standard registration categories (general, group, military/veteran, student) at the time of purchase. Class and training packages are non-refundable, non-transferable to another person, and be completed within 12 months of the date of purchase (unless other arrangements are made). Packages cannot be retroactively purchased once sales of individual classes or trainings have been completed, so be sure to select accordingly.
Practice Endorsement and Certification Program - Final Conferral
For both Practice Endorsements and Certification Programs, each course participant must submit an application to receive the final endorsement or certification once all requirements have been fulfilled as this is not automatic. The application can be downloaded HERE

Developing a Training Program: Creating a Successful Internship or Clinical Training Experience
"Accessing and Implementing Strategic Tools that Set You and Your Program Up to Thrive"
DESCRIPTION: As part of their desire to give back to the next generation of practitioners, or perhaps out of a commitment to social justice and serving under-resourced populations, or maybe even as a strategy for growing their business or program, many mental health professionals find themselves at some point in their career where they are essentially running a training program. This can happen both willingly or reluctantly as well as intentionally or accidentally. Of course, the most successful combination is choosing to willingly create or manage a training program in a way that intentionally or deliberately takes into account the growth and development of trainees across the arc of time in which they are training. Many people equate such training programs with pre-graduation requirements such as practicum and internship placements, which of course is accurate. At the same time, however, it's important to consider that a training program might also apply to licensure candidates who are post-graduate but pre-licensure, newly hired staff or employees, new teams of seasoned professionals working together in a different way, and many other such configurations. Using the Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice Triangle™ as a structural guide, and building on the developmental and integrative models of supervision explored in Clinical Supervision I, Clinical Supervision II, and Clinical Supervision III (which are prerequisites for this training), this advanced training supports managers and supervisors who want to start a training program - or who are already running a training program - in setting things up so that important administrative, clinical, and professional benchmarks are met in a developmentally-sequenced and coherent fashion. The course is divided into three functional domains: 1) getting things off to a good start with an emphasis on the supervisor activating the teacher role; 2) helping things deepen and grow with an emphasis on the supervisor using the counselor role; and 3) bringing things to an integrated and meaningful closure with an emphasis on the supervisor enlisting the consultant role. There will be a plethora of ideas and resources shared that are pertinent to each of these training domains and course participants will also have the opportunity to work alone and in teams to generate some of their own ideas based on the hopes, needs, and goals they have for their own various training programs. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and also as part of the Noeticus Administrative and Business Effectiveness - Practice Endorsement™ (NABE-PE) and/or the more comprehensive Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice - Certification Program™ (NCTP-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NABE-PE Course Package. Culture and Connection: Social and Political Determinants Underlying the Secure Base
"How Relational-Cultural Theory Interacts with Attachment Theory"
DESCRIPTION: Raising emotionally intelligent, well-adjusted children who are able to respond effectively to the demands of a complex world is no easy task. Determining whether one's child-rearing styles and goals are implicit or explicit and linking those to whose needs are being prioritized can be a delicate and tricky business because it's easy to unknowingly insert one's biases about what constitutes effective parenting into the process without adequately taking into account how one's early experiences, memories, and emotions helped shape those biases. Put simply, how one raises a child today has a lot to do with how they themselves were raised and how they were raised had a lot to do with what their own caregivers had in terms of resources and obstacles. Did their caregivers have the capacity to provide a safe, stable, and nourishing environment for them? If so, what were the factors that accounted for that experience. If not, why not? Was it related to individual or collective dimensions of their caregivers identity or both? This training investigates how the underlying capacity for caregivers (and by extension mental health professionals) to understand and manage the diverse and complex dimensions of their own personal identity - especially in terms of how they relate to institutional power and privilege - can serve as a protective factor or risk factor associated with the social and political determinants of health and mental health associated with their children (or clients). We use John Bowlby's Attachment Theory (AT) to provide important context as to what individual developmental needs children (or clients) have for a safe, stable, and nourishing emotional environment. At the same time, we draw from Jean Baker Miller's Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) to offer a more nuanced perspective on understanding how the intersectional aspects of personal identity within the collective experience interface with institutional privilege in critical ways that shape the capacity of caregivers (or mental health professionals) to more effectively attend to these developmental needs. In particular, we unpack how secure attachment is a form of unearned privilege, known as "attachment privilege," that is affected by and simultaneously affects multiple variables in the caregiver and child dyad (and also the mental health professional and client dyad). Through the process of linking childhood attachment themes to the theme of access to institutional privilege, it is hoped that a greater capacity may be achieved for supporting caregivers of all types in understanding and managing the diverse and complex dimensions of their own personal identities for the benefit of all they serve.
