Culturally-Informed Treatment: Applying a Social Justice Lens to Addiction Counseling

"Providing an Overview of How to Understand, Appreciate, and Work with Diverse Populations"

DESCRIPTION: Effective counseling starts with understanding a client’s cultural background and communicating in ways that are clear and respectful. In this class, counselors examine their own beliefs and biases in order to help prevent misunderstandings with people from diverse cultures, religions, and social groups. Students are also introduced to the fundamentals of cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, cultural responsiveness, and cultural humility. Students examine how these essential skills improve care quality and support better treatment outcomes. The training assists students in understanding how factors such as age, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, language, education, physical ability, income level, and racial or ethnic background can shape the counseling experience. By recognizing these differences, counselors learn to turn them into strengths that support the recovery process. Students learn to recognize and respect the beliefs, values, and traditions of a wide range of cultural groups. Key concepts include culture, ethnicity, race, cultural identity, acculturation, assimilation, cultural assumptions, bias, historical trauma, microaggressions, and modern-day prejudice. The National CLAS Standards are also introduced.
