Advanced Pharmacology: Further Understanding Drugs of Abuse and Their Impact on Human Physiology and Behavior

"Treating Drug Actions, Effects, and Implications"

DESCRIPTION: Neuroscience and genetic research on addiction continue to make significant progress toward understanding the changes in the brain that underlie drug use and behaviors. The research has the potential to significantly affect both the way in which we think about addiction and those who suffer from it. Addictive drugs have habit-forming actions that can be localized to a variety of brain regions that can activate the reward and seeking circuitry in the brain. This class explores the neurobiological basis of addiction and how addictive drugs produce neurochemical changes in the brain’s reward pathway. It will also explore new technologies for treatment and prevention based on brain science. Additionally, functional changes to the brain and the brain’s ability to recover after exposure to drugs of abuse, medical problems associated with substance abuse, and the use of pharmacological assists in recovery will be discussed. Finally, this and all addiction counselor classes seek to enhance the ability of the counselor to offer treatment services in a manner that respects gender, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural, familial, systemic, and socioeconomic diversity. NOTE: This class can be taken independently, as a required course for CAT/CAS/LAC credentialing, and also as part of the Noeticus Addiction and Recovery Therapy - Certification Program™ (NART-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NART-CP Course Package. Clinical Supervision II: Advanced Concepts and Skills for Mental Health Professionals

"Transforming Accidental Intervention into Deliberate Oversight"

DESCRIPTION: In Colorado (and many other states), the only legal requirement to provide clinical supervision is having an active mental health license. Because of that, many mental health practitioners become clinical supervisors immediately upon receiving their licenses without having any additional training in the specialized counseling practice of clinical supervision. Functionally, this often translates into new supervisors using counseling skills to work with new supervisees instead of supervision skills, a scenario that isn't always very effective or even helpful. As an antidote to this serious problem within all of the mental health professions, the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE); An affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors [NBCC]) developed the voluntary Approved Clinical Supervisor™ (ACS™) credential. This training is the first part of a three-part series covering the theory and practice of clinical supervision, all of which (when taken together) meet the training requirements for the ACS™ through the CCE. During our Clinical Supervision I training, participants learn the theoretical foundations. During our Clinical Supervision II training, participants build upon their theoretical foundations and add to them practical skills. Finally, during our Clinical Supervision III training, participants integrate the principles and theory they learned in Clinical Supervision I with the advanced concepts and skills taught in Clinical Supervision II and apply them in an experiential format. NOTE: This training can be taken independently, as an educational requirement for ACS™ Certification through the CCE, and also as part of the Noeticus Intentional Clinical Supervision: Level 1 - Professional Endorsement™ (NICS-PE-1) and/or the more comprehensive Noeticus Intentional Clinical Supervision - Certification Program™ (NICS-CP); Save 20% by purchasing the complete NICS-PE-1 Course Package. Culture and Connection: Social and Political Determinants Underlying the Secure Base

"How Relational-Cultural Theory Interacts with Attachment Theory"

DESCRIPTION: Raising emotionally intelligent, well-adjusted children who are able to respond effectively to the demands of a complex world is no easy task. Determining whether one's child-rearing styles and goals are implicit or explicit and linking those to whose needs are being prioritized can be a delicate and tricky business because it's easy to unknowingly insert one's biases about what constitutes effective parenting into the process without adequately taking into account how one's early experiences, memories, and emotions helped shape those biases. Put simply, how one raises a child today has a lot to do with how they themselves were raised and how they were raised had a lot to do with what their own caregivers had in terms of resources and obstacles. Did their caregivers have the capacity to provide a safe, stable, and nourishing environment for them? If so, what were the factors that accounted for that experience. If not, why not? Was it related to individual or collective dimensions of their caregivers identity or both? This training investigates how the underlying capacity for caregivers (and by extension mental health professionals) to understand and manage the diverse and complex dimensions of their own personal identity - especially in terms of how they relate to institutional power and privilege - can serve as a protective factor or risk factor associated with the social and political determinants of health and mental health associated with their children (or clients). We use John Bowlby's Attachment Theory (AT) to provide important context as to what individual developmental needs children (or clients) have for a safe, stable, and nourishing emotional environment. At the same time, we draw from Jean Baker Miller's Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) to offer a more nuanced perspective on understanding how the intersectional aspects of personal identity within the collective experience interface with institutional privilege in critical ways that shape the capacity of caregivers (or mental health professionals) to more effectively attend to these developmental needs. In particular, we unpack how secure attachment is a form of unearned privilege, known as "attachment privilege," that is affected by and simultaneously affects multiple variables in the caregiver and child dyad (and also the mental health professional and client dyad). Through the process of linking childhood attachment themes to the theme of access to institutional privilege, it is hoped that a greater capacity may be achieved for supporting caregivers of all types in understanding and managing the diverse and complex dimensions of their own personal identities for the benefit of all they serve. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and also as part of the Noeticus Relational and Systemic Approaches - Practice Endorsement™ (NRSA-PE); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NRSA-PE Course Package. Spiral Dynamics® II: Applying Clare Graves' Emergent Cyclical Levels of Existence Theory (ECLET) Model to the Personal and Organizational Change Process

"Deepening into the Dynamic Intersection of Life Conditions and Mind Capacities"

DESCRIPTION: Spiral Dynamics® (SD) refers to the colorful way in which change consultants Chris Cowan and Don Beck came to call Emergent Cyclical Levels of Existence Theory (ECLET), a theory that was originally generated by developmental psychologist Clare W. Graves, PhD and later adapted by contemporary philosopher Ken Wilber as part of his Integral Approach. In essence, it is a progressive model of human development that explores how life circumstances shape thought processes and what the value systems are that give those experiences meaning. In the first part of this engaging two-part experiential class series (Spiral Dynamics® I), participants are introduced to the basic elements of the model, which provides context for understanding how "value-holding systems" are associated with motivation, beliefs, and behaviors. The second part of the series focuses on applying these concepts specifically to individual and organizational change (Spiral Dynamics® II). Participants interested in purchasing and completing their own SD assessments prior to the Spiral Dynamics® II training will have the opportunity to do so at an additional charge and are encouraged to use them during the class to help better understand themselves as individuals and/or as part of a team or organization. Participants who choose not to purchase individual assessments can still participate, however, they will receive generic assessments. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and is also part of the Noeticus Organizational and Leadership Development: Level 2 - Practice Endorsement™ (NOLD-PE-2); Save 20% by purchasing all four Level I trainings at once; Learn more HERE.

Trauma-Informed Care for Diverse Populations: Transforming the Well-Intentioned Therapist with Effective Skills and Tools

"Exploring What Happened to Our Clients Instead of Focusing on What is Wrong with Them"

DESCRIPTION: This class will introduce the counselor to the concept of trauma-informed care, an approach that is being adopted more frequently within the human services fields based upon an increased awareness of the ways in which trauma impacts functioning. It will describe and define what trauma-informed care is and ways in which a traditional treatment setting can be modified to increase the sense of safety experienced by clients. Participants will learn how to incorporate trauma-informed practices into treatment with diverse populations, such as military veterans, women, people with co-occurring disorders and other groups. Although trauma treatment approaches will be considered, this class will not teach how to do trauma specific-treatment. Additionally, this and all addiction counselor classes seek to enhance the ability of the counselor to offer treatment services in a manner that respects gender, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural, familial, systemic, and socioeconomic diversity. NOTE: This class can be taken independently, as a required course for CAT/CAS/LAC credentialing, as part of the Noeticus Trauma-Informed Care - Practice Endorsement™ (NTIC-PE), and also as part of the Noeticus Addiction and Recovery Therapy - Certification Program™ (NART-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NART-CP Course Package. Advanced Case Conceptualization: Essential Skill Development for Addiction Counselors

"Continuing to Organize Clinical Information in a Meaningful Way to Track Client Progress and Support Service Planning"

DESCRIPTION: Client motivation and commitment to treatment begins with the assessment and diagnostic phase that typically occurs during the initial screening and/or intake. This course considers the differences between and among screening, assessment, and intake and the use of various evaluative instruments. The class also considers the components of the clinical assessment such as a biopsychosocial interview, assessment of risk for self-harm, identification of cultural needs and supports, problem domains, determining the stage of readiness for change, and strengths of the client. Differential diagnosis utilizing the DSM-5-TR™ and establishing the resulting level of care for the client will be discussed using the ASAM Criteria, 4th Edition. Stages of treatment and systems of care are covered along with key facets of treatment planning. Additionally, this and all addiction counselor classes seek to enhance the ability of the counselor to offer treatment services in a manner that respects gender, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural, familial, systemic, and socioeconomic diversity. Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals: A Foundational Overview of Psychotropic Medications and Other Drugs and Their Impact on the Body, Brain, and Behavior

"Strengthening Our Capacity to Serve as Collaborators with and Advocates for Our Clients Along the Continuum of Care"

DESCRIPTION: Though it is important to stay within our scope of practice as mental health professionals, we often find ourselves in situations where having some basic information about psychotropic medications and/or other psychoactive substances can be quite useful. With this knowledge, we become better advocates for our clients with other medical and mental health professionals as well as collaborators with our own clients. Such knowledge includes how medications and other substances are introduced into the body, how they are metabolized and distributed throughout the body, and finally how they are excreted. It also requires a working understanding of how medications and other substances affect the central nervous system, their short and long term effects on other body systems, as well as how they interact with one another. Using an engaging and participatory learning format, participants in this training learn the major classifications of psychotropic medications and psychoactive substances, gain a better understanding of how neurons and neurotransmitters work within the central nervous system, and become better acquainted with common side effects and adverse reactions to be watching for with their clients. In particular, this training focuses on antidepressants (e.g. MAO inhibitors, SNRIs, SSRIs, tricyclics, etc.), antipsychotics (typical and atypical neuroleptics), anxiolytics (e.g. barbiturates, benzodiazepines, etc.), mood-stabilizers (lithium, anticonvulsants, etc.), and cognitive enhancers/anti-ADHDs (psychostimulants, SNRIs, beta-blockers, etc.). We will look at some “off label” uses of these common psychotropic medications for other psychological symptoms or psychiatric diagnoses. Participants also learn about the DEA’s schedule of drugs and the most common psychoactive substances - including central nervous system depressants, central nervous system stimulants, opiates/opioids, hallucinogens, cannabis/cannabinoids, inhalants, anabolic steroids, designer drugs, and a few others. Additionally, MAT or medication-assisted treatment options for some addictive substances and/or behaviors is then explored (e.g. NRT, bupropion, naltrexone, buprenorphine, methadone, etc.). Finally, we address the issue of discontinuing psychotropic medications and/or other psychoactive substances, the problems associated with withdrawal and rebound effects, as well as the range of possible alternative treatments outside pharmacotherapies. NOTE: This training can be taken independently and also as part of the Noeticus Science and Technical Excellence - Practice Endorsement™ (NSTE-PE); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NSTE-PE Course Package.
