Group Counseling Skills: A Learning Laboratory for Clients to Gain Insight, Practice Skills, and Receive Feedback

"Fostering Skills to Facilitate Effective Recovery Groups that Address Group Tasks as well as Group Process"

DESCRIPTION: Group counseling or psychotherapy is a powerful tool in delivering addiction treatment services. This training is designed to support aspiring addiction counselors in developing a comprehensive understanding of group therapy within the addiction treatment field. Participants learn foundational concepts of group process and dynamics, as well as acquire the practical skills necessary to facilitate both psychoeducational and process-oriented therapy groups. The focus of the training includes group development and process, models of effective group therapy practice, common challenges encountered by group facilitators, and cultural considerations within group settings. Instructional methods include: group discussions, case study presentations, experiential exercises, and applied learning activities. Participants actively engage in skill development through structured practice. Video recording may be utilized to support skill-building, feedback, and self-reflection. Each participant has the opportunity to facilitate a group using realistic, scenario-based situations provided by fellow participants. Additionally, this and all addiction counselor classes seek to enhance the ability of the counselor to provide treatment services in a manner that is responsive to gender, racial and ethnic identity, sexual orientation, cultural and familial context, systemic influences, and socioeconomic diversity. NOTE: This class can be taken independently, as a required course for CAT/CAS/LAC credentialing, and also as part of the Noeticus Addiction and Recovery Therapy - Certification Program™ (NART-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NART-CP Course Package.
