Infectious Diseases in Addiction Treatment: Understanding the Body, Recognizing Risk, and Referring to Care
"Helping Our Clients Receive Comprehensive Care While Reducing Stigma"
DESCRIPTION: Substance use can increase an individual’s susceptibility to contracting and spreading infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted infections/diseases (STIs/STDs) and other blood-borne illnesses. Ongoing substance use has the capacity to weaken a person’s immune system, leaving such individuals vulnerable to health complications. Drug use is linked to risky behaviors including needle sharing and the use of contaminated drug paraphernalia. In this course, participants learn how infectious diseases may affect individuals who have a substance use or addictive behavior disorder. This training also gives information to participants about infectious diseases, necessary assessments, treatment considerations, and referral recommendations. Within this class, there is also ample discussion about the need to manage clinician biases, prejudices, and opinions so as not to cause harm. Additionally, this and all addiction counselor classes seek to enhance the ability of the counselor to provide treatment services in a manner that is responsive to gender, racial and ethnic identity, sexual orientation, cultural and familial context, systemic influences, and socioeconomic diversity. NOTE: This class can be taken independently, as a required course for CAT/CAS/LAC credentialing, and also as part of the Noeticus Addiction and Recovery Therapy: Level 2 - Practice Endorsement™ (NART-PE-2) and/or the more comprehensive Noeticus Addiction and Recovery Therapy - Certification Program™ (NART-CP); Save an additional 20% by purchasing the complete NART-PE-2 Course Package.
